The Japan Heterocerists' Society was established in 1953 in Tokyo. The academic word Heterocera means moths, (Japanese "Ga"), and Rhopalocera means butterflies, (Japanese "Chou"). Both belong to Lepidoptera (Insecta). JHS is the society specializing the study of moths in Japan and the neighboring areas.
Academic transactions named "Tinea" (a collection of English papers) and "Japan Heterocerists' Journals" (mainly Japanese) are issued constantly every year, and the special publications are issed occasionaly. These publications contain many new taxa and knowledge on moths.
Today, the society is supported by about four hundred members that are professionals and amateurs both.
